“I have never played a game of Monopoly and finished it”
Overheard over dinner tonight in Streghe, the new Italian restaurant on the block. It was an oldish lady in a company of about six. Somehow I didn’t follow the conversation, it would have been rude, but it did trigger a number of thoughts. When was the last time I played Monopoly? I can’t even remember. Except that it was with my brother and sister when we were still at school. My sister also refused to finish as she accused my brother of manipulating the game in his favour. For which he was a bit notorious. But thinking back, I have to admit that it must have been professional jealously. If you’re wide awake, Monopoly cannot be manipulated, but by a shrewd sense of business!
At the next table I caught bits and pieces of another conversation. The bits and pieces were exclusively coming from the younger female companion whose make-up was a bit overdone and the cleavage provocatively low (maybe I’m falling behind current fashion trends)… I suspect it was due to her higher pitched voice and the fact that her older male companion didn’t talk much. Was she trying to make an impression on him? Who will know. My take on it: an exploratory first date.
At first I thought our waitress (who was serving the seven occupied tables simultaneously) had a forced smile. Eventually I decided that it was a tired smile, genuine, but she would rather have been with: her child/lover/just alone at home? Her replies to our requests for recommendations were qualified by “I will find out from the kitchen” or something similar. Never expressing her own opinion.
And I realised, not for the first time, that opinions set people apart. Not merely relaying information. What makes people tick, a restauranteur serving all his wines at R95/bottle? Why?
Anyone interested in an online game of Monoply? Let me know.
